  1. This is a very belated comment, but I read the book and loved it. I thought the whole book was a great commentary on pride. Pride motivated almost every tragic event in the book -- why Max stayed married to Rebecca, why he killed her, why Mrs. Danvers scorned the second wife, why the girl's employer (whatever her name was) went to Monte Carlo each year, why the second wife doesn't ask for help in learning her new role, why Max can never return to Manderlay. I guess I like a book that makes me think.
